Removing Your Name from Junk Mail Lists
Just about everyone gets them – junk mail offers that claim you have been pre-approved for some form of credit or even a telemarketer that calls you at home letting you know you have been pre-approved. Though these credit offers can sound like a great plan, they are one of the best ways for identity thieves to steal your identity. The only way to prevent these junk mails and telemarketers from contacting you is to stop them in their tracks.
Eliminating Junk Mail
Annoying junk mail can be a tricky thing to get rid of, but one thing is for certain – writing “Return to Sender” on your junk mail and sending it back does not stop them from sending more to you the very next week. To remove your name from junk mail lists you need to do the following:
- *Write the company directly and request your name is removed from their mailing list.
- *Use pre-paid mailing envelopes provided in the junk mail and return them with a note stating your removal request from their mailing list. This means that they pay for the postage of your refusal letter.
- *Most junk mail will have a 1-800 number listed somewhere on the form. Call the number and request that your name and address are removed from their mailing lists.
Eliminating Telemarketing Calls
Telemarketers seem to call at all hours and have no respect for the words “no”. Therefore a consumer needs to know how to deal with them in order to get their name removed from the list. Telling a telemarketer to take your name off their calling list is not an effective maneuver. Effective ways are:
- *Stating clearly that the telemarketer needs to place your name on their “Do Not Call List”
- *Registering your number with the Do Not Call Registry online
- *Contact list brokers directly to have your name removed from their list
- *File your Do Not Contact with the DMA Direct Marketing Association
- *Call the consumer credit opt-out line at 1-888-567-8688
